Alagoa Bay is one of the most striking coastal landscapes on Flores Island, located on the northeast coast between Santa Cruz das Flores and Cedros. Surrounded by high green slopes and volcanic cliffs, the bay opens onto the Atlantic facing a remarkable group of rugged sea stacks and rocky islets. A small pebble beach lies along the shore, creating a landscape that feels both wild and peaceful and is highly characteristic of Flores.
The area forms part of the Northeast Coast geosite within the UNESCO Azores Global Geopark, a landscape shaped by lava flows, pyroclastic formations, sea caves, waterfalls and imposing cliffs. The surrounding islets and rocky slopes are also important habitats for seabirds, including Cory's shearwaters and common and roseate terns. Native Azorean vegetation covering the slopes enhances the secluded atmosphere and makes Alagoa an excellent location for landscape photography and nature observation.
The bay also has an interesting historical role. For centuries it was one of the few accessible natural harbours on Flores and was used to ship agricultural products, including oranges exported to mainland Portugal and England. Today the area is crossed by the first stage of the Flores Great Route, connecting Santa Cruz das Flores with Ponta Delgada and offering hikers a close look at this dramatic section of the island's coastline.
Beside the bay there is a picnic area with benches, barbecue facilities and toilets, making it a convenient stop while exploring Flores. Alagoa is also known for diving around the nearby reefs and volcanic formations. Stone surfaces and paths can become slippery after rainfall, so suitable footwear is recommended, and weather and sea conditions should always be checked before taking part in activities close to the water.
