The trail

Serra do Topo–Fajã dos Vimes descends from São Jorge’s central plateau to the south coast on a slope covered in vegetation. The start briefly follows the regional road south, then enters a dirt track bordered by hydrangeas. A gate gives access to the right into endemic woodland, where damp conditions and shade dominate the beginning of the descent.

The ground becomes progressively steeper and may be muddy before reaching an old stone stairway cut across the cliff. At lower elevation, the route meets a road and passes the Água Azeda spring. Another dirt track leads into Fajã dos Vimes and finishes at the small harbour. The sequence of plateau, forest, stairway and fajã reveals the effort historically required to connect high ground with coastal plots. At the destination, an agricultural landscape is associated with coffee cultivation and craft traditions within a settlement sheltered beneath the slope.

Água Azeda acts as a clear reference in the lower section after the old stairway ends. From the spring, the route leaves the most enclosed part of the descent and prepares the transition into the inhabited, cultivated landscape of Fajã dos Vimes. Reaching the harbour completes that movement from ridge to sea.

Directions

Start at Serra do Topo and briefly follow the regional road south. Turn left onto the hydrangea-bordered dirt track, pass through the gate and take the right-hand route into endemic woodland. Follow the steep descent and old stone stairway until reaching the road. Turn right, pass the Água Azeda spring and then take the left dirt track that finishes at the harbour in Fajã dos Vimes. Arrange return transport. After the spring, confirm the left turn onto the final dirt track leading down to the harbour.

Safety

The descent may contain mud, roots and very slippery stone, especially on the old cliff stairway. Wear boots with good grip, move slowly and remain on the waymarks. Close every gate and keep clear of livestock. Stay alert to traffic on the road. Do not drink from the spring without local information on potability, and arrange transport before leaving.
