The trail

Rota da Água crosses Nasce Água and Serra do Morião by following traces of different uses of water. Five ruined mills beside Ribeira dos Moinhos mark the beginning and recall the water power that supported local activity. The ascent passes Mãe-de-Água, a spring, and a small hydroelectric installation, bringing walkers close to structures created to collect, channel and regulate water.

A reservoir receives water associated with Furna d’Água and Cabrito before the path enters natural vegetation in an area important for infiltration. Cruzeiro and Serra da Costaneira lead to the high point, with views over Angra do Heroísmo, Monte Brasil and the south coast in clear weather. The return repeats much of the route with one small variation. The walk turns discreet infrastructure, springs and ruins into a reading of water, showing links between volcanic relief, energy and urban supply.

The mill ruins appear at the beginning, while the spring, hydroelectric installation and reservoir are encountered progressively on the ascent. This order lets walkers follow water from traditional uses towards more recent technical structures before reaching the summit view, where the broader relationship between hillside, city and coast becomes visible.

Directions

Begin at Nasce Água beside the five ruined mills of Ribeira dos Moinhos and climb the slope of Serra do Morião. Pass Mãe-de-Água and the small hydroelectric installation, then continue to the reservoir and the area of natural vegetation. Proceed through Cruzeiro and Serra da Costaneira to the high point. Return mostly by the same route, using only the short marked variation on the descent. On the descent, use the short variation only where marked, then rejoin the outward path to Nasce Água.

Safety

Part of the route crosses a restricted-access area connected with water collection and distribution; obey every sign and do not touch valves, pipes or other structures. After rain, stone, roots and soil become slippery, making footwear with good grip essential. Do not enter the mill ruins, and avoid the high point in fog or strong wind.
