The trail

Quatro Caminhos do Faial da Terra is a 7.4-kilometre circuit climbing from the village to ridges between Povoação and Água Retorta. The opening crosses farmland and the Regional Road several times, showing how modern roads have cut across older shortcuts. A former whale lookout stands on the ascent, recalling the period when observers searched the ocean for cetaceans and signalled to boats.

Box hedges accompany the path towards the junction with PR18SMI. A signed branch approaches Pico dos Bodes, a high point with views over the ridges, Faial da Terra and Fajã do Calhau. The circuit continues through forest and pasture, alternating woodland shelter with openings over the south-eastern coast. This convergence of rural tracks in the uplands explains the “four paths” name.

The descent returns to the valley and offers a branch towards Sanguinho before taking a steep old stone lane into Faial da Terra. Rated medium and taking around three hours, the walk combines whaling heritage, agriculture, forest and broad views. The experience depends on checking codes carefully at junctions; switching routes may lead onto a linear crossing or a trail with a different condition from the intended circuit.

Directions

Leave central Faial da Terra and follow the waymarks through fields, crossing the Regional Road only at indicated points. Pass the former whale lookout and continue among hedges to the PR18SMI junction. Use the signed branch if visiting Pico dos Bodes, then return to the circuit. Continue through forest and pasture until the descent begins. At the Sanguinho connection, remain with the PRC40SMI code and descend the stone lane back into the village. Allow about three hours to complete the 7.4-kilometre circuit and keep a margin of daylight, including time for signed branches and stops.

Safety

Stop and check both directions at every Regional Road crossing. The final stone lane is steep and can become very slippery; wear grippy footwear and use poles if accustomed to them. Close gates, avoid disturbing livestock and check codes at the PR18SMI and Sanguinho junctions. Fog can quickly conceal waymarks on higher ground. Carry a charged phone and, in an emergency, call 112 with PRC40SMI and the number of the last route post seen.
