Praia da Viola is a 4.9-kilometre coastal crossing between Lomba da Maia and Maia. Starting beside the church in Lomba da Maia, the walk descends through fields and pasture until the agricultural landscape gives way to sea cliffs. Below, the narrow stony beach lies isolated between steep slopes, fed by springs and small waterfalls that keep the hillside green.
The site preserves ruins of watermills that used these flows to grind grain. Stone steps, channels, wash tanks and old walls reveal a working place that required people to descend to the shore and climb back carrying loads. The beach is therefore more than the scenic focus of the route: it tells a story of water, milling and community adaptation to a difficult coastline. Under certain sea conditions, a signed alternative avoids the most exposed passage beneath the cliff.
Beyond Praia da Viola, the trail climbs past further mill remains and damp ground, gaining views along the north coast. It approaches Maia and finishes in the Porto Novo area, where access to the sea again expresses the village’s Atlantic connection. Although rated easy and estimated at two hours, the route has surfaces and exposure that require care. Its linear design links two distinct settlements but makes return transport planning necessary.
