The trail

The Norte Pequeno circuit links the parish with the fajãs of Mero, Penedia and Pontas on São Jorge’s north coast. From the parish council building, the route crosses the settlement towards the sea and enters a dirt access among farmland and water-collection structures. The descent winds across the cliff, where vegetation and relief make the difference between plateau and small coastal areas immediately apparent.

Fajã do Mero is the first settlement reached. The route continues on the road to Fajã da Penedia, with a spur to the chapel, then arrives at a junction for Fajã das Pontas. Houses and a small harbour mark this final platform. Returning to the junction, the circuit takes the Penedia road and climbs back to Norte Pequeno. Farm access, religious buildings, homes and harbours together show how these fajãs maintain complementary links with the parish despite the steep slope separating them.

The Penedia chapel and the harbours at Pontas and Mero act as references at different points on the circuit. Between them, narrow roads and cliff paths document a local network created to serve several small coastal communities. Returning by Penedia completes this network without simply reversing every part of the outward descent.

Directions

Start beside the Norte Pequeno parish council, cross the settlement towards the sea and turn left onto the dirt track. Pass farmland and the water-collection area, then descend the cliff switchbacks to Fajã do Mero. Continue on the Penedia road, take the marked chapel spur and proceed to Fajã das Pontas and its harbour. Return to the junction and climb the Penedia road back to Norte Pequeno. At the junction after returning from Pontas, take the Penedia road branch to begin the climb back.

Safety

The cliff descent is steep and includes tight bends, dirt ground and potentially damp sections. Wear boots with good grip, keep back from the edge and do not overtake on narrow passages. At fajã spurs, always confirm the waymarks for the return. Respect homes, fields and water infrastructure, and keep away from the small harbours in rough seas.
