The trail

Mistérios Negros crosses one of Terceira’s most expressive volcanic landscapes. From Lagoa do Negro and Gruta do Natal, the path enters a damp area dominated by heather and native cedar. Pasture, a water tank and a narrow passage through endemic vegetation precede the Lagoinhas do Vale Fundo, where standing water contrasts with the dark rock.

The geological focus of the circuit is a group of black trachytic domes associated with the 1761 eruption, still sparsely vegetated compared with the surrounding forest. Pico Gordo and Pico da Cancela provide changing perspectives across this relatively recent relief, while an optional spur reaches Pico Gaspar. The succession of ponds, native woodland, pasture and lava offers a direct reading of ecological recovery after an eruption. Challenging ground and the enclosed atmosphere of the forest give this route its distinctly wild character.

The domes remain visually distinct because plant colonisation is slower on comparatively recent rock. Seen from the path, they make the difference in relative age between the eruptive field and the developed woodland around it easy to recognise. The ponds add another contrast, collecting water within a landscape defined by fire and stone.

Directions

Start beside Lagoa do Negro and Gruta do Natal, following the road through heather and native cedar. Cross the pasture, pass the water tank and enter the narrow path towards Lagoinhas do Vale Fundo. Skirt the volcanic domes, continue through Pico Gordo and Pico da Cancela, and use only the marked spur to Pico Gaspar. The circuit returns through woodland and pasture to the starting point. After Pico da Cancela, follow the marked return and avoid repeating the optional Pico Gaspar spur.

Safety

This is a difficult circuit over uneven lava, roots, mud and narrow passages. Wear boots with good grip and carry rain protection even when conditions appear settled. Fog can obscure both waymarks and relief, so never leave the route or climb the domes. Close gates, keep away from livestock and use only the signed Pico Gaspar spur.
