The trail

Lagoa do Capitão is a linear descent from Pico's central plateau to São Roque do Pico. The route begins beside the Transversal Road and first approaches the lake, framed by pasture and upland vegetation. After visiting the shore, it joins a dirt track lined with large Azorean junipers. This opening landscape, exposed and often damp, offers a clear experience of the island's high interior.

After roughly three kilometres, the route skirts Piquinho and opens views over the north coast. It then returns to the main descent, follows a gravel section and crosses pasture by the markings. A shortcut through endemic vegetation leads to the most demanding part: a steep cobbled lane that loses height quickly. As elevation falls, the vegetation changes and Australian cheesewood becomes more frequent, marking the transition from plateau to inhabited land.

Leaving the trees, the trail passes a picnic area and continues toward Cais do Pico. It finishes at the Convent of São Pedro de Alcântara in São Roque. Lake, native vegetation, pasture, distant coast and built heritage unfold in one continuous progression; the medium grade reflects the surface, sharp descent and rapidly changing upland weather rather than the length alone.

Directions

From the Transversal Road, enter the signed access to Lagoa do Capitão. Follow the asphalt to the lake and, after visiting the shore, take the dirt track on the right. Continue for about three kilometres toward Piquinho, then return to the main descending line. Follow the gravel track for 400 metres and turn right into pasture. Use the marker posts and enter the shortcut through endemic vegetation before descending the steep cobbled lane. On leaving the woods, turn right beside the picnic area and continue toward Cais do Pico until the Convent of São Pedro de Alcântara. Arrange collection in São Roque because the start lies on the plateau.

Safety

The trail is open. On the plateau, fog, rain and wind can reduce visibility quickly; postpone the walk if markings cannot be seen. Wear waterproof boots with reliable grip, especially on saturated pasture and the steep cobbled lane. Carry warm layers, water and backup navigation. Control your pace during the long descent to protect knees and ankles. Respect livestock, leave gates as found and do not cut across fields.
