The trail

Ladeira dos Moinhos is a short circuit beginning in the historic centre of São Roque do Pico. The start lies near an old bridge and the main church, in an urban setting that quickly gives way to a cobbled climb beside a stream. After only a short stretch of asphalt, the route enters the steep lane that gives it its name, where shade and running water help the surface retain moisture.

Several old mills appear during the ascent, positioned to use the force of the water. Even where structures are incomplete, they show the importance of this small watercourse to milling and village life. After roughly 1.2 kilometres, the path reaches an asphalt road and the rhythm changes. This upper section opens views across São Roque and its coastal strip, contrasting with the enclosed corridor of the mill lane.

After about 700 metres on the road, the markings turn into the descent. The return again follows a watercourse on a narrow path, partly bordered by a small wall, until it reaches the starting point. Its short distance and easy grade suit a brief walk, yet the inclined surface and persistent presence of water give the circuit a distinct character.

Directions

Begin beside the old bridge near São Roque's main church. Climb the asphalt road and, after about 80 metres, turn right onto the steep cobbled lane beside the stream. Remain on this ascent, passing the old mills, for roughly 1.2 kilometres. On reaching the asphalt road, turn right and follow it for about 700 metres, using the openings for views over the village. At the next marked turn, go right again and begin the descent beside the watercourse. The narrow path follows a small wall and leads directly back to the starting place. The circuit closes in central São Roque, so no transfer between endpoints is required.

Safety

The trail is open. Cobbles and the path beside the water can become very slippery after rain, so wear footwear with grippy soles and place each step carefully. Do not enter the mills or approach unstable structures. The descent is narrow and partly bordered by a wall, requiring considerate passing when other walkers are present. On road sections, use the verge and remain alert to local traffic.
