The trail

The Grande Rota da Graciosa covers roughly forty kilometres in a circuit divided into two stages, providing a broad reading of the island. The section from Barra to Luz first follows the east and south coasts, where Praia’s low shoreline gives way to the cliffs of Ponta da Restinga. Views of Praia Islet and Baixo Islet accompany a landscape exposed to the Atlantic before the route approaches the Caldeira massif.

Within the volcanic interior, the walk links the large depression with Furna do Enxofre and rural tracks serving nearby settlements. The stage from Luz to Barra passes Caldeirinha de Pêro Botelho, a cavity about twenty-five metres deep, and gains Serra Branca for views across different parts of the island. Old ox-cart ruts around Fontes add a reminder of traditional transport. Cliffs, fields, villages and volcanic landforms follow in quick succession, showing how Graciosa’s compact area contains sharply contrasting environments within one continuous journey.

Dividing the route into stages gives both coast and interior enough time to be read on their own terms. Rather than reducing the island to a rapid circuit, the itinerary shows how settlements act as transitions between landscapes and provide logical places to pause, resupply and resume the walk on the following day.

Directions

Complete the route in its two designated stages. The first leaves Barra, follows the east and south coast through Praia and Ponta da Restinga, approaches the Caldeira and finishes in Luz. The second resumes in Luz, passes Caldeirinha de Pêro Botelho, climbs Serra Branca and crosses the cart-rut area at Fontes before returning to Barra. Book accommodation and support transport, and check the grand-route waymarks at every junction. At Luz, finish the first stage before resuming towards Barra on the interior route the following day.

Safety

Both stages require planning for distance, water, food, accommodation and transport; do not rely on camping, which is not permitted along the route. Coast and ridges can bring strong wind, heat or rapid changes in visibility. Keep back from cliffs and cavities, wear sturdy footwear on cart ruts and check the weather before starting each day.
