The trail

Baías da Agualva follows an indented section of Terceira’s north coast, where cliffs, small coves and coastal vegetation create a notably varied landscape. The descent through Grota da Lagoa approaches Fajãzinha, a sediment-filled coastal platform with a pebble beach. This low, sheltered space contrasts with the rock walls that dominate much of the remaining walk.

The following climb opens views of prismatic formations in the cliffs and continues along the coast towards Baía das Pombas, a favourable place for observing seabirds. Ponta do Mistério brings another shift in the character of the shoreline before the route approaches the regional road. The itinerary combines volcanic forms, coastal deposits and habitats exposed to the Atlantic. Although this linear walk is relatively short, uneven relief and changing views across the bays make it feel more varied than its distance suggests.

Fajãzinha is the point closest to the sea, while the rest of the path gains height to observe the coast from above. This alternation between pebble beach and cliff makes it possible to compare ground built by deposition with walls shaped by erosion, all within one concise route along Agualva’s protected shore.

Directions

Begin at Canada da Alagoa and descend through Grota da Lagoa to Fajãzinha and its pebble beach. Climb the slope on the marked path, then continue above the cliffs and prismatic rock formations. Proceed through Baía das Pombas and Ponta do Mistério until reaching the connection with the regional road. Because the trail is linear, arrange return transport from the far end in advance. After Ponta do Mistério, keep towards the final endpoint rather than returning to earlier coastal spurs.

Safety

The route includes descents and climbs beside cliffs, pebble ground and sections exposed to wind and sea. Keep back from edges, wear footwear with good grip and do not enter the beach in heavy swell. At Baía das Pombas, watch birds without approaching nesting areas. Avoid disturbing vegetation and cross the road only where visibility is clear.
