The 7.1-kilometre Agrião trail is temporarily closed. That condition must guide all planning: it is not currently an available walking link between the Povoação area and Ribeira Quente. When accessible, this linear route follows old paths across São Miguel’s south-eastern coast, traversing the slope of Lomba do Cavaleiro and ground shaped by streams, woodland and cultivation.
The line gains height above the coast and alternates among orchards, pasture and forest sections. Its name recalls watercress-growing places associated with wet ground, while exposures of pumice and ignimbrite reveal the volcanic construction of this part of the island. Around Ponta do Garajau, the route meets a more open maritime landscape before resuming its descent. Historic paths and small religious landmarks, including the area of Santa Rita chapel, connect the walk with local movement and traditions.
The crossing reaches Ribeira Quente, a village sheltered between steep slopes and oriented towards its harbour. A medium rating and estimated three hours reflect the elevation change and varied surfaces. If the route reopens, walkers will need to check its condition at that time and arrange transport between endpoints. Until then, this account explains the landscape it crosses and is not an invitation to enter.
